It’d be a huge lie if I were write that back, nearly forty years ago, as I stood in Sultan Ahmet Square in Istanbul, I was of a similar mindset as the hippies or most of the young people who, in those famous sixties, wandered aimlessly between the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia.
Kosta leta 1957 brata Idris in Namık odprla bistrojček z imenom Lale Restaurant, si zagotovo nista predsta- vljala, da bo njuna prodajalna, kjer so ponujali raznovrstne pudinge, zaslovela tako, da jo je mnogo let kasneje, leta 2003, obiskal celo predsednik Clinton med svojim uradnim obiskom Turčije.
Zelo bi se zlagal, če bi zapisal, da sem takrat, pred skoraj štiridesetimi leti, ko sem stal na trgu Sultan Ahmeda v Istanbulu, razmišljal podobno, kot so razmišljali hipiji ali pa večina mladih, ki so se v tistih famoznih »šestdesetih« brezciljno potikali med Modro džamijo in Hagio Sofijo. Turbulentni, s prav posebno energijo naelektreni flower power me je samo rahlo oplazil in v mojo glavi so se takrat vrteli popolnoma drugačni filmi.
Hippi Süleyman’ın hikâyesini ise kadim dostu Namık Çolpan’dan öğrenmeye çalıştık. Namık Bey, Sultanahmet Meydanı’na bakan en ünlü mekânlardan birinin işletmecisi. Mekân, 1957’de Lale Restaurant adıyla kuruluyor.
60’lı yılların sonunda Sultanahmet, saçında çiçekleriyle gezen hippilerin uğrak yeriydi. Yabancı ‘bitli turistlerin’, Türk çiçek çocukların buluşma yeri Pudding Shop bir dönem Bill Clinton’ın da durağı oldu

The Pudding Shop is the nickname for the Lale Restaurant in Sultanahmet, Istanbul, Turkey. It became popular in the 1960s as a meeting place for beatniks and, later on, hippies and other travellers on overland route between Europe and India, Nepal, and elsewhere in Asia: the “hippie trail”.
In its heyday, the Pudding Shop was an obligatory stop on the “hippie trail,” a starting point for restless vagabonds from the West on their way through the exotic East.
Clinton da geldi Batı’dan gelen hippiler burada buluşur ve Doğu’ya yapacakları yolculuğu planlarlarmış. O dönem burada asılı bir pano sayesinde birbirleriyle haberleşen hippiler, üzerinde İstanbul-Hindistan yazan otobüsün kalkmasını beklerlermiş. Pudding Shop şimdi de Adem ve Faruk Çolpan kuzenler tarafından işletiliyor.
